The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will appoint members to his expert committee only after UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Mr. Lynn Pascoe visits Sri Lanka to hold discussions with the government, a top UN official in New York told Daily Mirror online.

When questioned about the date of Mr. Pascoe's visit to the island, the official said that the UN Chief was currently finalizing the details of his visit.

When Rtd. Gen. Sarath Fonseka was the Commander of the Army he had brought many officers under Court Martial and some of them were penalized personally by him, MCNS Director General Lakshman Hulugalla told in an exclusive interview with Ada Derana.

Defeated presidential candidate Rtd. Gen. Sarath Fonseka has threatened to go on a hunger strike to protest against his detention, his wife said Sunday. Fonseka will begin his fast unless allowed to telephone their two daughters studying in the United States, Anoma Fonseka told reporters in Colombo.

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) is to visit General Sarath Fonseka next week to see if recommendations given by the commission on his detention facilities have been implemented, HRC sources told Daily Mirror online.

The HRC which had visited General Fonseka recently submitted a report to the relevant authorities by the HRC Commissioner and certain recommendations have been mentioned to improve the facilities offered to the General.

Gen. Sarath Fonseka, is a total lie and the SINHALAYA News Agency can confirm with credible evidence.

An official from the British Foreign office is due in Sri Lanka on a two day visit today for talks with Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said and the recent controversy involving UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband is expected to figure in the discussions.

Rtd. Gen. Sarath Fonseka has suspended the fast unto death as he was allowed to telephone his daughters last night, sources close to the General told Ada Derana. Military Spokesman Maj. Gen. Prasad Samarasinghe yesterdat said that Fonseka has been granted permission to speak to his two daughters over the phone.

The United National Front (UNF) will oppose the extension of the emergency when it is taken up for debate at a special session of parliament next week, UNF General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror Online. The UNF which includes the main opposition the United National Party (UNP), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Sri Lanka Freedom Party Mahajana Wing and the Democratic People's Front will voice its strong objection against the emergency especially at a time when the country has other issues to concentrate on, Attanayaka said.

Chinahas emerged as Sri Lanka's biggest single lender in 2009, overtaking the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, the treasury said Wednesday. China lent 1.2 billion dollars to build roads, a coal power project and a port in the island's south last year, more than half the total of 2.2 billion dollars in foreign aid in 2009.

Fort Magistrate today refused to grant bail to Welington De Hoedt a director of Hicorp Ltd. The Magistrate added that since the case required investigations both in Sri Lanka and the US granting bail would hinder such investigations. He was arrested and produced in court by the CID on January 7 for allegedly cheating public money by forwarding forged documents to the Sri Lanka Army.

It has been a year since the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team - in which a dozen gunmen attacked the team bus with rifles, grenades and pistols, wounding six players, a British coach and a Pakistani umpire and killing seven policemen. Since the attack, two assailants have been arrested, one was shot and killed while one of the facilitators was identified and is in prison and four others are still at large.
