Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa speaks to " Hard Talk " about the threat of an international conspiracy at work against the country in the form of seeking a regime change, as former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka enters the Presidential fray.
He attributes this to the 'disappointment' that certain countries and their political elements may have experienced with the country's victory over the LTTE and the decision by the President to not give in to international pressures he alleges were moved by elements who sought to safeguard the LTTE during the last stages of the war.
According to the official poll results , President Mahinda Rajapaksha has won Ambalangoda electorate of Galle district , home town of opposition common candidate Sarath Fonseka. President Rajapaksha has received 33,488 votes (62%) whereas Fonseka managed to win only 19191(31%). It is reported , both Ranil Wickramsinghe and Fonseka were wathichng the election telecast together and Mr. Wickramasinghe has left the place saying “Sarath , You could not win even your home town?” This confirms the earlier prediction made by Wimal Weerawansa that Wickrmasinghe used Fonseka to avoid unpreventable election defeat and later to say “If I contested I would get more than what Fonseka got”. Cheif incumbents of several temples in Ambalagoda area too predicted and publicly declared that Mr. Fonseka could not win at least home town.
Tilakaratne Dilshan smashed 104 off 122 balls to lead Sri Lanka to a comfortable win over Bangladesh on Monday in the opening match of the limited-overs tri-nation series. MS Dhoni, the Indian captain, has been banned for two ODIs because India maintained a slow over-rate during the second match against Sri Lanka in Nagpur. The ban is effective immediately, which means Dhoni will be unavailable for the games in Cuttack and Kolkata, returning only for the final ODI in Delhi. Virender Sehwag will captain the side in his absence.
Dhoni had been informed of the ban verbally, BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla confirmed. The rest of the Indian players were fined 40% of their match fee for the offence.
